Logo Work

I’m sitting here typing out my thoughts on a logo project. Right now I’m worried I’m going to do something uninspired. I just spent the the last 20 minutes in the library looking for a reference or something to spark an idea. I realized that I’m probably just going to order some type on a page and make it look appealing and I feel dissapointed about that. Why, well because the logo is for our company non-profit arm that aims to raise scholarship money for students. AiP gives out around $25,000 each year and that number has grown. I’m bothered by this turn of events because this logo has the chance to be something special, one of those rare projects where the corporate brand doesn’t matter (too much) and there is complete creative freedom. One thought I always share with aspiring designers is that, “There are no bad projects, only bad designers.” My words feel turned against me.

Here is the complete picture. I was handed a stack of logo concepts produced by a class in another school, I can’t remember where (somewhere in the Midwest I think). This is the one at the top:

I have a lot of issues with this whole situation. Taking something a student has worked on and reworking it usually doesn’t go over well with the student. The conflicting issues are contributing to my sense of being uninspired. Here I’m typing about it instead of working on it.

Well here is my design thought process. The type face is bad and the star shapes are awful. The concept is unoriginal in my opinion and should be handled differently or executed in a more clever way.

I’m going to start with Mrs. Eves for the main font and use either Univers or Akzidenz Grotesk for the slogan or school relevent information. I’m expecting those typefaces to work well together and create the right visual communication for the foundation. As far as the stars… we’ll see.
