Career Feats

There are few jobs that I really take personally at work anymore. I mean it is all business when you come down to it, and as long as the work gets done who cares. That one job that really needs carful attention comes around once every two years and I really have to pour myself into it for it to be successful. The Viewbook/Catalog combo. This iteration has been no exception and I’ve put a lot of energy into this book and it has turned out rather well.

This is my third cycle of promotions with AiP and honestly going into this year I didn’t really want to do it. Creating these documents is a lot of work and pressure, and who wants that. In previous years I had some great help in design concept and layout, illustration, photography. This year I took a different approach. I decided it was time I took most of the reins myself and really directed everyone else involved. With that said, no man is an island so I enlisted the help of a few students. I’ve always had the philosophy that since we are an art school illustration needs to be a key element of our promotional material. A picture can be worth a thousand words but good illustration can say things that photography cannot. So I found a really great student who is about to graduate in December, Michael Kuzin. Mike turned out to have a great style for what I wanted to do. I was actually inspired by his own work and we even used one of his current personal works for the cover of the viewbook. I also had a great photographer, Lisa (I don’t think she has a website), who was willing to work with me in a free form direction style I like to take with photographers. I also need to recognize all the other student’s whose work they lend to the school to use for promotional purposes. I’m inspired by what they do and I wouldn’t be able to bring it together without out their support.

In 2005 & 2007 I was recognized with friend and Illustrator, Jake Thomas, for the work we did on the first and second catalogs. Now I’m I’m in my third round and I feel like this is the best ever. We’ll see if the book is received as well as the others, but honestly I’m not worried about it. (I’d publish a link to the file but I’m having technical difficulty with that right now)
