Kennywood at AiP

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh will be hosting a variety of artifacts, photos and memorabilia from Kennywood. From May 1st – July 30 stop by The Art Institute gallery to view the show. Click here for a simple animated gallery invitation.

We’ve been planning this show for many months now and I must say it is coming together very well. We have a lot of old photographs straight from the Kennywood Archives (a small closet in one of the security buildings) as well as some classic arcade machines.

What has been most interesting to me is the fact that I’ve been to Kennywood a number of times in planning this event and only once has the park been open. The only time I’ve been to Kennywood to ride the rides was once last summer for the company picnic. This fact really isn’t a big deal, but for some people it is a complete 180 from their experience. Especially people who grew up going to the park. Once when we were there an older guy in our party exclaimed how bizarre it was to be in the park without crowds of people, rides under maintenance, etc.

  1. Kennywood is a summer staple for me. I’ve been there at least once a season since I was little and can’t imagine ever being sick of it.

I’ve been back and forth to the park a lot recently for employment stuff, and without the crowds, it is indeed a bit eerie.

I can’t wait to see the gallery!

  2. I wrote a pretty hefty feature about Kennywood several years ago, and got to check out a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff as part of the visit. It would be the same as walking through the park while it was closed, but I got the same Twilight Zone kind of feeling, going from huge crowds back into the buildings where the old arcade games are stored.

The exhibit looks really cool, by the way. We’ll be stopping by…
